Parietal Cells

May 2014

Proton pumps become activated following stimulation with food. The ingestion of food causes a series of biochemical events that ultimately allow proton pumps to migrate to the parietal cell surface and secrete protons which form gastric acid. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are only activated in an acidic environment and PPIs only bind to and inhibit active proton pumps.
